Bleeding after extraction: when to return

What can I do before assessment?
Sit upright and bite firmly on clean slightly damp gauze over the socket for 20 minutes without repeatedly lifting it. Seek help if bleeding is heavy or persists.
Is pink saliva normal?
A small amount of blood can occur. Active flow, rapidly soaked pads or weakness requires assessment.
Should I rinse vigorously?
No. Rinsing and spitting may disturb the clot. Follow the dentist’s instructions.
Should I stop blood-thinning medication?
Do not stop anticoagulants or antiplatelets yourself. Tell the dentist which medicines and doses you take.
Does everyone need sutures?
No. Pressure alone may help, while other cases require a hemostatic dressing or sutures.
Can I exercise?
Avoid exertion until the situation is stable. Discuss returning to sport with the treating dentist.
Why has bleeding restarted?
Clot disturbance, exertion, tissue condition or medicines may contribute. An examination is needed to identify the cause.
When should I seek emergency medical care?
Heavy uncontrolled bleeding, dizziness, marked weakness or fainting requires emergency medical help.
