Retainers (retention phase)

After braces or aligners, teeth tend to relapse. Retainers hold the new position until tissues adapt, protecting your result long-term.

What retention is

  • Fixed retainer - a thin lingual wire bonded with composite.
  • Removable clear retainer - a transparent night tray worn per schedule.
  • Combined retention - fixed wire plus night trays for maximum stability.
  • Duration - personalized; commonly 12–24 months. Fixed wires may stay for years.

Why retainers are needed

  • Relapse prevention - stops teeth drifting back.
  • Periodontal stabilization - tissues adapt to the new position.
  • Protects your investment - preserves the orthodontic outcome.
  • Comfort & esthetics - discreet and easy to live with.

How it goes

  1. Stability check
Occlusion review, periodontal status, relapse risks.
  2. Choosing retention
Fixed, removable or combined - based on case and compliance.
  3. Manufacturing
Scan/impressions and custom fabrication of wire/tray.
  4. Bonding / delivery
Wire bonding or tray hand-over with wear instructions.
  5. Follow-up
Regular checks; repair wire or replace trays when worn.

FAQ

How long do I need retainers?
At least 12–24 months. Fixed wires may stay longer with proper hygiene and check-ups.
Do retainers affect speech/eating?
Usually no. Tongue adapts to the wire; trays are removed for meals.
What if the wire comes off?
Don’t pull it. Book a repair promptly to prevent tooth movement.
Do I need trays if I have a fixed wire?
Often yes, especially early on. Combined retention is the most stable.
