Curettage: pocket treatment and follow-up
In periodontitis, deposits and bacterial biofilm may extend below the gum line. The dentist measures pockets and assesses bleeding and bone support. At MasterDent in Pozniaky, the scope of cleaning is based on examination rather than bleeding or bad breath alone.
Non-surgical root debridement and open-access procedures have different indications. Reassessment is needed after initial treatment: healing does not mean maintenance visits are no longer necessary. Home hygiene and regular monitoring form part of long-term care.

How is curettage different from routine cleaning?
It treats areas below the gums and the root surface when indicated. Professional hygiene and periodontal pocket treatment may be separate stages.
Does everyone with bleeding gums need curettage?
No. The cause of inflammation and periodontal condition must first be assessed. Gingivitis may need a different plan from periodontitis.
When is open access needed?
This depends on remaining pockets, anatomy and the response to previous treatment. Pocket depth alone does not determine a universal prescription.
Is pocket cleaning painful?
The dentist assesses the need for local anesthesia and checks its effect. Sensitivity can occur afterwards; aftercare is tailored individually.
Will lost bone grow back after cleaning?
Cleaning does not guarantee replacement of lost bone. Regenerative procedures have separate indications and a case-specific prognosis.
Are antibiotics necessary?
Not for everyone. The dentist decides; antibiotics do not replace mechanical cleaning and hygiene.
Why is a follow-up examination needed?
It checks bleeding, pocket depth and the need for further treatment. Maintenance is still needed after improvement.
