Crown or onlay: a decision after tooth assessment
A crown covers the prepared part of a tooth and helps restore shape and function. Before prosthetic treatment at MasterDent, 24/4 Revutskoho Street, remaining tissue, root, gums and bite are assessed. A large filling or previous root canal treatment alone does not replace individual examination.
Material is selected for the tooth location, load and appearance. A natural-tooth crown differs from an implant crown, and a ceramic onlay may be an alternative when indicated. Cleaning the crown margin and interdental spaces remains important after permanent fixation.

Frequently asked questions
Is root canal treatment always needed before a crown?
No. Endodontic treatment is performed when indicated. A vital tooth can support a crown if its condition permits.
When can an onlay replace a crown?
When sufficient tissue and suitable clinical conditions allow partial coverage. This is assessed after examination and discussion of loading.
Which is better: zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal?
There is no universal answer. Tooth location, bite, aesthetic requirements, preparation and material properties are considered.
Is an implant crown different?
Yes. A natural-tooth crown rests on a prepared tooth; an implant crown is supported by the implant system and abutment. Components and fixation differ.
Why use a temporary crown?
It may protect the prepared tooth and maintain shape while the permanent restoration is made. Your dentist determines whether it is needed.
Can sensitivity occur after fixation?
It can, but significant or persistent pain or a high bite needs examination. The cause cannot be established from a description alone.
What is included in the cost?

How long does a crown last?
There is no fixed lifespan for every patient. Tooth condition, bite, hygiene, habits and regular monitoring all matter.
